The Whippet’s story begins in 19th-century England, where working-class families bred small Greyhounds with terriers to create a swift, versatile dog. These new hounds excelled in “snap dog” competitions and rabbit coursing, gaining popularity as racing dogs often referred to as the “poor man’s racehorse.”

Beloved for their speed, elegance, and affectionate nature, Whippets quickly found a place not only in the sporting field but also as cherished companions in the home. Their history reflects a perfect balance of athletic prowess and loving devotion.

Development into Today’s Breed
